This whole tragedy shows just how selfish and completely brain dead humans can be. It’s like they did everything in their power to do the wrong thing. The boat was sinking for hours, so many could have been saved!

Your instructor is exactly correct. Drill, drill, drill - until you know exactly what to do if you roll out of your rack at 2am for GQ. I feel very fortunate to serve with and under many squared away, hard nosed sailors. Professionalism is contagious! RIP for these poor sailors - completely clueless and untrained. Sad story.

From the Org trying to sell the Bounty for $4.9mil and the Captain's really questionable and infuriating decisions. It really smells like an Insurance Fraud executed between the Org and the Captain. Btw, the Org collected $5.1mil from insurance company. The said insurance company tried to sue the Org and recoup the payout in the same year of incident but lost the case on year 2022.

great take from 31:32 onwards. Regulations are there for a reason. Many times the reason is 'someone died because of this'. Just like the Alfried Krupp accident that killed two rescue men. Lessons were learned. But it had to come to that first.

24:36 Patrol Vessel 123 has the Sewol captain onboard that's why I think them refusing the HQ's orders were caused by this abhorring sewol captain manipulating the patrol crew. I think this abhorring sewol captain wanted to "bury" witnesses for ordering the victims to stay put in their rooms instead of announcing abandon ship and order all victims to prepare for going into lifeboats not knowing the victims had sent recordings of them trapped in the ferry to the outside world. That's why even just the order of usage of the patrol's speakers to blast the announcement of abandon the ferry was refused by the patrol vessel.

Very sad to watch, especially with a well prepared ship and experienced captain, but well presented with only _facts. That last turn starboard by the Rose, with wind now to port plus a severe list to starboard, must have been deadly when the williwaws hit. I often sailed in the Whitsundays Australia, and we knew that at certain spots along the coast, we could get suddenly hit by very strong gusts that we called 'bullets'. These would lay us over some 80° at times, but a quick maneuver into the wind, eased sheets, and the deep ballasted keel swiftly brought us back upright. R.I.P. 🇦🇺

Feel free to correct anything that isnt accurate. Per my understanding, the reason that direct communication was made to the onshore management instead of the coast guard is due to a liability command structure. No one wants to be the individual who calls for an emergency evacuation of all hands, vecause with no one manning the rig, the potential for it to capsise goes from possible to probable. If that happens, whoever is highest on the command that issued/okayed the order will hold a large part of the blame once the emergency has passed. If the captain calls for an evacuation of all hands, and has no agreement from the upper chains of command, then the consecquences of the action can easily be averted by land management and pinned solely on the ranking officer of the vessel. A similar hesistation of evacuation happened on the deepwater horizon, and subsequebtly caused redudant casualties.

Cast Iron has graphite and other impurities in its structure, this makes it very good in compression but unpredictable when it comes to its tensile strength. Cast iron is very fast to produce a large number of a specific shape and design but not particularly good for construction which will deal with shearing or tension and this bridge was one of the major examples during the industrial era that lead to the change to steal being used rather than Iron. At uni we had a lecture on this bridge and it was concluded that the plilars that made up the legs between the girders were the cause of the faliure due to the high winds and a highetened tidal depth made worse by the high winds, the load of the train and the blocking off of the wind through the bridges structure caused the cast iron to shear and the bridge to fail.

A ship is safer at sea than in port during a hurricane? That right there should have been all that needed to be said to show this guy didn’t know Jack about being a captain. Even if that were partially true it isn’t about the damn ship, it’s about the human beings on bird you can’t rebuild. Besides that, Who in there ever living right mind would take a masted ship, WITH HOISTED SAILS, into a friggin hurricane? The masts were ripped and twisted off? yeah NO SHIT, that’s why you close sails during a storm and anyone who has any common sense knows that. You take the big things that catch wind away from the wind.
